700 km long? World’s longest lightning

The lightning length that has been observed so far has been recorded in Brazil, reaching a whopping 709 km long. This lightning strike is said to have doubled the size of the longest recorded lightning ever observed in Oklahoma, USA in June 2007.

The World Meteorological Organization’s WMO, a UN-affiliated organization, recognized the record of thunder observed on different days in Brazil and Argentina on June 26 (local time) as a world record in two areas, one lightning length and a single lightning duration, respectively. Lightning The world’s longest record was a 709km lightning observed in southern Brazil on October 31, 2018. According to the satellite GOES-16 observation recording video released by the US Ocean and Atmospheric Administration NOAA, a lightning strike in southern Brazil covers all of Brazil. The largest lightning strike in the world so far was observed in Oklahoma, USA on June 20, 2007, and was 321 km long. Therefore, this lightning is far more than twice the past world record.

At the same time, WMO announced that the record for the longest lightning period was also updated. Lightning observed in Argentina on March 4, 2019 discharged for 16.73 seconds. The record of the lightning duration observed so far was 7.74 seconds in the province of Provence, France. With this announcement, both the length and duration of lightning have been updated by more than twice.

WMO officials explained that the world record released this time is a threatening record for a single lightning discharge phenomenon. It is a measure of the direness of a phenomenon that can occur in nature, and at the same time is evidence of the scientific progress that has been able to measure this phenomenon.

Meanwhile, the WMO emphasizes that the record breaking is a serious concern that lightning can have a wide range. He also appealed that in order to protect himself from lightning, he must strictly obey the 30-30 rule. The 30-30 rule is a safety measure to evacuate indoors if lightning is heard more than twice and the interval is within 30 seconds, and refrain from outdoor activities for 30 minutes after the last lightning strike.

According to the record of a lightning-related disaster in the past, 21 people died from lightning strikes while avoiding a thunderstorm in Zimbabwe in 1975, the highest record for direct damage. In addition, in 1994, a lightning strike in Egypt exploded an oil storage tank, causing the fuel burned by the flood to flow to nearby villages, and 469 people were killed, the most indirect damage caused by lightning.
