Starbucks suspends social media ads “to stop the spread of hatred”

Starbucks announced that it will temporarily suspend advertising on social media. The reason is that to halt the spread of hate speech, both business leaders and policy makers need to come together to make a real impact on change.

In the United States, voices on the prevention of BLM (Black Lives Matter) have been raised starting with the Floyd assault case. Facebook’s attitude of continuing to neglect campaign advertisements including posts, facts, and other content, as well as violent praise by President Trump and politicians, has been exposed to criticism. As a result, human rights organizations such as ADL launched a campaign called Stop Hate for Profit, and dozens, including apparel brand North Face, announced that they were canceling advertisements on Facebook in July. .

Facebook clarified a policy change on this issue a while ago that warns users of the label that politician posts are also problematic. Of course, organizations such as ADL point out that it is still insufficient.

Meanwhile, the announcement of Starbucks is to temporarily suspend advertising, but the target is for the entire social media platform, and the suspension period is not limited to July. Rather than a campaign flow criticizing Facebook’s policy response, Starbucks said that business leaders and policy makers alike need to come together to make a real difference, and that a lot of work is needed to build a comprehensive online community. Rather than the overly hateful atmosphere caused by the BLM movement, Starbucks’ position may seem to be a voice to demand more concrete change than a punitive response.
