
Amazon began shipping tests in Washington, DC in January 2019 using the Amazon Scout, an autonomous robot. The test was also conducted in California, but it is expanding the scope of the test to Georgia and Tennessee.
The Amazon Scout is a box-shaped robot about the size of a bag, developed in a lab in Seattle. Carry luggage to customers while running on the sidewalk at the speed of a person walking and avoiding walking people or objects. In the experiment, he succeeded in accurately moving the luggage to the destination avoiding obstacles.
However, luggage cannot be automatically taken out of the container, and unlike general courier services, it cannot be transported to the front door. Now, in order to receive luggage, you have to go to the sidewalk and take it out yourself. In the test, an Amazon assistant accompanies me to take out the luggage and deliver it to the customer. However, if the helper is not accompanied, the procedure is unknown. This is where we are concerned about how the recipient is authenticated, the container opens, and what Amazon will use.
Small delivery robots are being developed by various companies such as Amazon as well as Alibaba with the aim of commercialization. Drone delivery is also being tested for practical use.
