
German AI design software company Hyperganic designed a rocket engine using AI and made it by drawing it into a 3D printer. This prototype was 3D printed using Inconel 718, a nickel alloy used in spacecraft. It is molded into a seamless engine when outputting, not combining individual parts. The molding itself is reasonable and lightweight, so there is an organic wave pattern on the outside of the combustion chamber, and the gap is designed to help effective cooling.


What we first defined in the design is the shape of the combustion chamber and the core part that performs the necessary cooling function. Interestingly, I saved it in the formula Excel format, not in CAD format, and let the algorithm read it. Because humans are obsessed with design, stereotypes, and ready-made concepts, it is difficult to make a wrong object while maintaining functionality. However, AI does not have this, so it is possible to design with free ideas while providing only variables and algorithms. Rather than creating a design, AI creates hundreds or thousands of variations from scratch and evaluates the optimal solution.
The engine is said to be in negotiations with some airline companies. Someday, companies like SpaceX, Boeing, Virgin Galactic, and Blue Origin may adopt it. Related information can be found here .
