App Annie has released a new report exploring how Gen Z consumers, born after the mid- to late 1990s, use smartphones or mobile apps.
According to data collected in the third quarter of 2020, Gen Z users spend an average of 4.1 hours per month of popular non-game apps. 10% higher than the previous generation. Gen Z also uses apps more often than previous generations, with more than 20% of non-game app sessions per user, and 120 sessions per month.
Of course, app usage data focused on Gen Z is focused on the US, UK, Brazil, France, Germany, Indonesia, Japan, Mexico, and Turkey markets, including Korea, and only Android terminal data was used.
According to the report, Gen Z uses more games than the previous generation, but does not access the game as often as the usage time. Generations over 25 actually spend 20% more time on the most used games and 10% more accesses. Gen Z and previous generations also spend more time gaming than non-gaming apps.
One of the most eye-catching games used by Gen Z users is the casual arcade game Among Us. With team-based multiplayer features and Twitch streaming, it is ranked as the third most played game in the world. Other popular Gen Z games include puzzle games like Candy Crush Saga and Toon Blast, action games like PUBG Mobile, Free Fire, Minecraft Pocket Edition, Simulation games like Roblox made their name.
AppAni also investigated which apps Gen Z users use in the non-gaming segment on both iOS and Android. It is TikTok and Snapchat that have gained Gen Z support in 9 out of 10 markets. According to the financial results released on October 20 (local time) for Snap, the number of daily users exceeding analyst expectations increased by 4% to 238 million. Discord is also growing and is gaining popularity in France. This is because mobile and remote games played a central role in interpersonal relationships during the Corona 19 period.
As an entertainment app, Twitch has gained popularity in 6 out of 10 markets. Finance and shopping apps are not yet widely accepted by Gen Z, but they are promising. There are few popular financial apps, but Gen Z tends to use non-banking fintech apps such as Venmo, Monzo, and DANA. In Korea, Toss, a P2P payment app that provides loans, insurance, and credit, is popular. In addition, fashion apps that are popular with Gen Z are Shein, ASOS, Shopee, and Merkari.
Overall, Gen Z users are becoming a big player in the market being analyzed. Growth is more so in emerging markets like Indonesia and Brazil. It is becoming a strong consumer generation on mobile, with 98% owning a smartphone. The estimated annual expenditure is $143 billion.
