Chinese smartphone maker Oppo announced an AR glass prototype OPPO AR Glass 2021 during OPPO Innovation Day held in Shenzhen, China. By adopting a new optical system, it is 75% lighter than the previous concept model, while choosing a design that looks like large sunglasses.
Oppo also announced OPPO CybeReal, a platform that includes an AR cloud that can replicate the real world in cm increments. In fact, Oppo is focusing on the augmented reality field, starting with an AR developer program from 2021.
The Oppo AR Glass prototype, which Oppo introduced in 2019, took the form of large goggles like Microsoft Holo Lens. However, the second-generation model, the 2021 concept model, has been greatly miniaturized by adopting a split design that separates the left and right displays and a Birdbath optical system. Oppo AR Glass 2021 is a peripheral device with a built-in sensor and display, and is used by connecting it to an Oppo smartphone using a USB Type C cable. The built-in sensor supports precise gesture recognition and millisecond recognition through a combination of sensors such as an ultra-wide-angle stereo camera, ToF sensor, RGB camera, and 6DoF motion sensor, and realizes accurate recognition of the user’s posture or position, and natural overlapping display between AR and reality. did.
In addition, the display adopts 0.71-inch AMOLED, and the viewing angle is said to be able to express a 90-inch screen in front of 3m, so there seems to be nothing to block the view.
Oppo Cyberreal, which was announced together, is a platform that enables users to interact with AR apps and users in the real world by hosting a replica that reconstructs the real world in cm units in the cloud, allowing for quick expression tailored to the AR glass sensor. Oppo is planning to officially launch the AR developer program from 2021 and promote AR app development by providing AR Glass and its own API.
Meanwhile, Oppo also unveiled OPPO X 2021, a modified smartphone concept model at this event. This product has a design that allows you to physically increase the screen size by storing a rollable display inside a smartphone.
A flexible display that combines AMOLED and a bendable substrate has been shown for a long time, but it has been difficult to commercialize such as strength and screen, and only recently, Samsung Electronics and Lenovo are releasing foldable smartphones and laptops.
OPPOX 2021 is a concept model that allows the screen to be enlarged or narrowed without a folding mechanism by using a rollable display technology that continuously winds a flexible display. The display is housed inside at the edge of the body. Unlike folding, in which the thickness of the main body is determined according to the ratio at which the display can be bent, this product expands to the side as it is, so the diameter of the winding part is only 6.8mm. A foldable with a folding display has the advantage of changing the size of the two screens from minimum to maximum when unfolded when folded. The Oppo X2021 has a built-in motor, so it can automatically expand or contract the main body and screen. For example, when playing a video, the size may change automatically according to the aspect ratio.
The main body is a 2in1 plate interlocked in a comb shape, and the size can be adjusted without a step. The display is 6.7 inches in diagonal in the form of a thin smartphone and 7.4 inches in tablet mode. If you look at the numbers 6.7 and 7.4, you might think that they have only changed a little, but because the width is wider and the aspect ratio changes, the area becomes wider.
Of course, the Oppo X2021 is a concept design, and no specific specifications or product release dates have been announced. However, rather than vague imagination, Oppo is appealing that it can be realized through self-developed technology. According to Oppo, 122 patents were secured through research and development through the production of Oppo X2021 portotypes, and 12 of them are related to the winding machine.
