AI measures mental health with cancer patient eye movements?

The research team reportedly developed a method to help detect anxiety and depression in patients with cancer by training AI that analyzes patient eye movements after surgery to measure the mental health of cancer patients.

Although the research is still in its infancy, this system uses Tobii Pro 2, an eye tracking glass, using a combination of a convolutional neural network and a deep learning algorithm called long and short-term memory to convert the patient’s gaze and pupil status into data. In comparison, we investigated how relevant the data was to mental health.

As a result, the correlation between eye movement and mental health was found to be 93.8-95%. However, further validation may still be required to ensure that the original number of subjects is as small as 25, and the accuracy to determine differences in health conditions, especially in high-risk situations. In addition, the wearing of the glass may be related to the reaction direction.

However, if a high correlation can be obtained even when testing with a large number of subjects, it could be a new field of application of AI in the medical industry. For example, even if there is a possibility that depression may appear during home care, it may be possible to check the mental state of a patient at all times by wearing a glass and automatically contact a psychotherapist if a bad number appears.
