Puerto Rico approves budget for reconstruction of Arrecibo Observatory

Puerto Rico Governor Wanda Vasquez has signed an order to enforce a $8 million budget allocation as a public policy for the reconstruction of the Arrecibo Observatory, which was forcibly shut down due to the collapse of the facility structure.

The National Science Foundation of America abandoned the repair of the Arrecibo Observatory, which included a huge reflector, because of the high risk. However, the construction of new radio telescopes was not prohibited here after the facility was demolished. Governor Vasquez assessed the Arrecibo Observatory as a world-class facility with the ability to contribute to scientific discovery, national security, scientific research and education, and tourism for 57 years, and the collapse of the radio telescope is a great opportunity to redesign it. He said he believed he had brought.

However, it is difficult to build a new radio telescope on a $8 million budget. Governor Vasquez says the budget will cover the demolition of the collapsed building and the design of a new radio telescope. Therefore, the construction of a new functional radio telescope here will require additional financial support.

Nevertheless, Governor Vasquez expressed his commitment to space research with the Arrecibo Observatory, saying that radio telescopes could become a world-class educational platform for future generations. This stance could lead to a decision to put a budget on US government agencies to revive the observatory. Related information can be found here .
