Amazon announced the purchase of 11 Boeing 767-300s to power up the Amazon Air. Amazon Air already owns and operates more than 50 aircraft, but so far all aircraft have been leased, and this is the first time it owns.
Four West Jets and seven Delta Air Lines were purchased from. It is now in the stage of converting the aircraft purchased from WestJet from airliner to freighter. Amazon Air will start operating aircraft purchased from WestJet in 2021, and will begin operating aircraft purchased from Delta in 2022.
Sarah Rose, Vice President of Amazon Air, said that the mix of renters and owners will be able to properly operate and manage the supply chain, which will ensure that the promises made with customers will be delivered at high speed and free of charge.
Reportedly, the deal was established by selling aircraft at lower prices than usual by airlines in trouble due to the spread of Corona 19. Amazon is pursuing development to realize transport technology for both airborne, such as Prime Air, a drone delivery service, in September 2020 approved by the Federal Aviation Administration and announced an autonomous robot taxi in December 2020.
