In Rotterdam, the Netherlands, a floating farm, the world’s first floating ranch, has been built and is operating. Raising cows where waves flood. The reason for the construction of such a floating farm is that in the future, when the sea level rises due to melting ice due to warming to cope with climate change, we are making a realistic review of whether it is necessary to move the infrastructure to the sea far from the coast. Floating cities, wind turbines, and floating farms are part of this effort. Floating farms are one of these.
The 1,200m2 farm floating in the sea has 32 cows and produces 600 liters of milk a day. Power generation uses solar panels and uses rainwater for water. 80% of feed is used grain or grass mixture obtained from parks and golf courses. The remaining 20% is said to be the optimal feed for which experts were involved.
In the lower part of the farm, there are facilities such as a waste treatment plant, yogurt manufacturing, milk bottles, and reservoirs. At first, there was a plan to produce feed using LED, but it was abandoned because it could only procure 20% of the required amount.
An expert in charge of the UN-announced floating city project on the sea said that nine out of the world’s top 10 cities will be exposed to sea level rise by 2050. Floating farms like this are good for utilizing surface space on Earth as sea levels rise. It is said that it is to prove the point.
Milk produced on the floating farm is sold at the Rotterdam store for 1 euro per 250 ml. Related information can be found here .
