Hermes, an artificial leather bag made of mushrooms…

What if you use artificial leather made from mushrooms as an alternative to calfskin? A startup called MycoWorks developed Sylvania, a bio-material made from mushrooms with Hermes. This material is said to be made with the patented Fine Mycelium technology that processes mycelium like leather.

Attempts to make leather from mycelium are also being challenged by Bolt Threads, known as artificial spider webs, and are attracting attention as environmentally friendly materials. Leather substitutes do not have to kill animals and can be a coping with environmental issues. Making leather from natural materials such as mycelium can be beneficial to the environment and animals as well.

Hermes products using these experimental biomaterials are expected to be released at the end of 2021. Related information can be found here.
