Oculus Rift S discontinued, focuses on standalone VR

It is said that the stock of the Oculus Rift S, a virtual reality headset for PCs introduced by Facebook, has been discontinued. What a Facebook representative revealed in a report. Oculus Rift S is sold in various channels around the world, but it will not be supplemented even if the channel is sold out in the future.

The announcement that the Oculus Rift S will be discontinued in 2021 was mentioned at the time of the Oculus Quest 2 announcement in September 2020. Facebook will not release virtual reality devices for PCs in the future, but will focus on standalone virtual reality devices such as the Oculus Rift 2.

However, virtual reality platform assets for PC are not wasted, and Oculus Quest 2 can use virtual reality contents for PC through Oculus Link, a wired connection to PC. The Oculus Rift S, announced in March 2019, has so far required an external camera sensor to determine the position of the headset and controller. It became the same way as the first Oculus Quest.

At the time, it had advantages in hardware specifications than Oculus Quest, but there was little difference in performance from Oculus Quest 2, which was announced a year later, and the location was subtle due to the official release of Oculus Link and 90Hz support through the Oculus Quest 2 update.

In addition, it was the same price at the time of release of Rift S and Quest, but at the time, Oculus also revealed that it served as an A/B test. As a result, it can be said that many consumers chose Quest, a standalone virtual reality device, and Facebook used it as a factor in completing the development of a virtual reality device for PC.
