[Weekly Podcast] Huawei unveils ransomware and OS that hit meat companies

Brazil-based JBS, the world’s largest meat processing company, announced on May 31 that a cyberattack had disrupted IT systems in the United States, Canada and Australia and brought all affected systems to a halt.

The company made it clear that recovery progress had been made on June 1 and that most factories are expected to resume operations on the 2nd. However, the affected factories supply a fifth of U.S. meat production, causing temporary global concerns about a meat shortage. Meanwhile, the US government issued a statement expressing its view that the June 1 attack was by a Russian-based criminal organization.

Huawei’s own operating system, Harmony OS, is in full swing. On June 2nd, Harmony OS 2 held an online presentation and announced that smartphones, tablets, and smartwatches with operating system functions and installed models were also applied to existing models. In the case of the existing target, although it is limited to the announced Chinese market model, the number reaches a whopping 100 models.

Like the Huawei Watch 3, the first smartwatch to be equipped with Harmony OS, Huawei also announced new products such as MatePad Pro and MatePad 11, a tablet equipped with Harmony OS.

Microsoft is hosting a major Windows update announcement event online on June 24th. It is said that the event announcement has already been sent to the major media.

This event is held after Microsoft stopped developing Windows 10X for dual screens. Microsoft is announcing that it will introduce some of the new features and UI that were prepared through Windows 10X to Windows 10. Market research firm Counterpoint Research and IDC have released smartwatch and wearable device shipments and market share data for the first quarter of 2021.

According to Counterpoint Research, global smartwatch shipments increased by 35% in the first quarter of 2021 compared to the same period last year. IDC also reported that smartwatch shipments worldwide in the first quarter of 2021 were 104.6 million units, an increase of 34.4% from 77.8 million units in the same period last year.

TSMC, the world’s largest semiconductor foundry, which supplies semiconductors from famous manufacturers such as Apple, Nvidia, Qualcomm, and AMD, announced that it has begun construction of a new semiconductor manufacturing plant in Arizona, USA.

It is known that the Arizona plant will invest 12 billion dollars, and according to CEO Wei, if the construction proceeds smoothly, mass production by the 5-nano manufacturing process will actually start in 2024. It is reported that some of the Arizona plant’s production capacity may be used for automobile chips that use AI and the like.
