Xiaomi removes Mi brand after 10 years of use

It has been reported that Chinese smartphone brand Xiaomi will not use the name Mi in its product names in the future.

Xiaomi has several smartphone brands such as Poco and Redmi, but so far, the core of the product lineup has been smartphones, tablets, and smartwatches starting with Mi. For example, the Mi 11, released as a high-end smartphone equipped with Snapdragon 888 in December 2020, can also be seen as a brand pronoun such as using the same name.

However, in the first half of last year, Xiaomi announced the Xiaomi MIX 4, a high-end smartphone equipped with an under-display camera. The naming convention was changed from the previous model, Mi MIX 3. According to reports, the Xiaomi CEO said that the US name will not be used for future Xiaomi products.

Xiaomi plays a large role in Xiaomi’s product lineup. It has been 10 years since Mi released the Xiaomi Mi 1, the first smartphone of the Mi brand in 2011. Abolition of this brand is a big decision for Xiaomi. Referring to the example of Xiaomi Mix 4, in the future, Mi may simply be replaced by Xiaomi.

In addition, it has been confirmed for a long time that Xiaomi did not use the US brand in its product name in China. The removal of the US brand from the product name has already been decided and may be reflected in stages from China to the world. Related information can be found here.
