Google Cloud Supports Carbon Emission Display

Google announced the Carbon Footprint, a function that allows companies to know the amount of carbon emissions generated by using the service in its cloud service, Google Cloud.

Carbon footprint can measure and track carbon emissions generated when companies use the cloud. This report enables monitoring by product or region on a per-project basis and supports the achievement of corporate carbon footprint targets. Corporate customers such as Athos, Exy, HSBC, L’Oreal, Salesforce, and Twitter are collaborating to develop this reporting function.

The need for companies to accurately determine their carbon emissions is not only part of their eco-friendly efforts, but also means using them for internal audits and carbon disclosure. In other words, it helps improve corporate governance.

In addition, Earth Engine, a cloud platform for geospatial analysis, has also been introduced to some Google Cloud users. Businesses can use satellite imagery and datasets to track, monitor, and predict changes in the surface environment, and for projects with low environmental loads and costs.

Although this function is a company, Google itself has been carbon neutral for the past four years and is aiming to operate carbon free 24 hours a day, 365 days a year by 2030. Although this function does not seem to have anything to do with general users, companies can reduce carbon emissions and consumers who use the service can also contribute to eco-friendly activities.
