Alibaba Unveils Cloud Computing Optimized Server Chip

Yitian 710 is a server chip for data centers by AᅟᅳᆯLibaba Cloud, a subsidiary of Alibaba Group, which provides cloud computing services.

T-Head, who is in charge of chip development at DAMO, a leader in technology and scientific research in Alibaba Group, announced the server chip Itian 710 for cloud computing services. At the same time, Alibaba Group also announced its own development server, Panjiu. The combination of Panju and Itian 710 makes it possible to optimize computing performance and energy efficiency, thereby enhancing Alibaba Cloud’s major cloud services.

Itian 710 is a server chip manufactured in a 5nm manufacturing process with an operating frequency of up to 3.2GHz and has 128 ARM cores to realize outstanding performance and high energy efficiency. The processor chip consists of 60 billion transistors and is expected to be the first server chip compatible with the latest architecture, ARMv9. In addition, it provides 8 DDR5 channels and 96 PCIe 5.0 lanes.

Itian 710 scores a score of 440 in SPEC CPU2017, a standard benchmark for measuring CPU integer processing power, and it is said to exceed the performance of the existing ARM server processor by 20% and energy efficiency by 50%.

Damo announced that it will use the Itian 710 to support current and future businesses throughout the entire Alibaba Group ecosystem, and in the near future, it will provide customers with next-generation computing services using servers equipped with the Itian 710. In addition, he added that it will work with global partners such as Intel, Nvidia, AMD and ARM to innovate computing infrastructure and provide various computing services to customers around the world.

Its own server version was developed for the next-generation cloud basic infrastructure. It succeeded in optimizing the server for both general and specialized AI computing by separating it from computing storage. It adopts a modular design for building a large-scale data center, and emphasizes that it can show excellent economic effect for various cloud-native workloads such as containerized applications and optimized workloads.

In addition, Alibaba Group announced that it would open source the Xuantie series of RISC-V chips it had developed independently. As a result, developers can access source code from GitHub and the Open Chip Community to build user-made prototype chips for IoT applications, such as network gateway edge servers. In addition, it announced that it would open source related software stacks that support multiple operating systems, including Linux, Android, RTOS, and Alibaba’s own AliOS.

The open source of several products developed by Alibaba Group aims to help global developers build their own RISC-V-based chips in a much more cost-effective way by disclosing their in-house IoT processor IP core and related software stack development tools. It is said to be done with It is hoped that this move will foster innovation in the ROSC-V software community and benefit from a connected world in the digital age.

In response to this Alibaba Group movement, the RISC-V International community said that Alibaba is supporting the community through continuous contributions, technological leadership, and collaboration with RISC-V stakeholders. By stimulating the V community, it is said that it is promoting chip development innovation and bringing benefits to the entire ecosystem. Related information can be found here.
