Canon USA was sued by Canon printer owners on October 12, 2021. The plaintiff complains that it is unfair that the scanner or fax machine cannot be used if the Canon multifunction device runs out of ink.
According to the complaint obtained by a man (David Leacraft) living in Queens County, New York, in March 2021, he purchased a Canon printer Pixma MG2522 all-in-one from a local Walmart. I bought this product for the purpose of a scanner function, but after purchase, I found that the scanner was not usable when the ink cartridges were low or empty. The trial documents state that plaintiffs would not have purchased the device and would not have paid a large sum for it had they known that they had to refill the ink to scan the documents.
He said that he discussed this on the Canon web forum, but Canon replied that there was no alternative. Plaintiff’s attorney argued that Canon is forcing consumers to purchase ink cartridges whether they intend to print documents or not, as Canon advertises that its MFPs can print, copy and scan, but do not require ink to scan. did.
In light of this, the litigation demanded at least $5 million in compensation from the company, arguing that Canon’s indication that a scanner or fax machine could be used under normal circumstances to promote MFP sales constituted false fraudulent product labels and advertisements.
