If you attach a cat’s whisker to a human…

Since ancient times, in science fiction works, parts of the human body or all other than the brain have been replaced with robot parts to create a strong body and special abilities. Of course, it is difficult to long for something like this. The limbs cannot be restored even if they are replaced with strong prosthetics or prosthetic feet.

The University of Colorado research team is working on a new sensor that emulates a cat’s whiskers rather than hands and feet. Cats are often said to measure the gap they can pass through with their whiskers. Can humans experience this sensation?

In this study, the Cat Whisker Sensory Extension Wearable system, four long whiskers mounted on the cheeks, was made with FlexPoint’s flexible flex sensor. This beard, when touched, gives feedback to the wearer through sound or vibration. The vibration intensity is also designed to change in proportion to the whisker curve.

The research team said it aimed to expand and strengthen human senses, and even map animal senses. It also aims to understand how the brain adapts to external sensations in response to new stimulation by this whisker. Related information can be found here .
