SK Telecom and Samsung Electronics announced the Galaxy A Quantum, a smartphone equipped with QRNG, a quantum random number generator.
This product is based on Samsung Electronics’ Galaxy A71 5G, and has improved security by mounting SKT IDQ S2Q000, a chip that generates QRNG. QRNG irradiates image noise from an internal LED and acquires it with a CMOS sensor to generate an unpredictable random number based on this data. The chip size is also small with 2.5×2.5mm.
Random numbers are used for cryptographic security functions such as payment platforms and two-factor authentication, but have been targeted by hackers so far. According to SK Telecom, there is currently no means to predict and hack random numbers generated by QRNG. In addition, this product specification includes an Exynos 980 processor on a 6.7-inch AMOLED display, Android 10 as an operating system, and supports 5G communication.
