Stack Overflow, a programming-related knowledge community, released the results of a survey conducted on 65,000 programmers from around the world. You can check the ranking from various perspectives, such as the programming language that programmers like, the programming language they usually use, and the salary ranking by language. For reference, this survey was conducted in February 2020, before each country banned going out due to the corona 19 infection.
First, the most loved by programmers is Rust, who answered that 86.1% of them are good. Rust is an open source programming language. According to Stack Overflow, it ranked first for five consecutive years since the 2016 survey. In addition, TypeScript, which ranked third in the 2019 survey, showing a slight difference from Python, rose to second place in the 2020 survey, overtaking Python. In addition, Go, which was ranked 10th in the 2019 survey, also raised the ranking to 5th. At the bottom, in addition to VBA, a programming language installed in Microsoft Office series, there are three (Objective-C) and Perl (Perl).
Next, we asked what programming languages the programmer doesn’t usually use, but wants to learn in the future. As a result, Python made up 30% of the total, ranking first for four consecutive years since the 2017 survey. In addition, VBA, Perl, and Objective-C, which were ranked as the worst three in the popular programming language rankings, recorded the worst TOP3 here.
Next, we investigated what programming language programmers are using. The most used programming language is JavaScript. In the Stack Overflow survey, JavaScript remained at the top for eight consecutive years. In addition, in the 2017 survey, Ruby, which was in the TOP 10, gradually lowered its ranking and was overtaken by a new language such as Gona Kotlin.
Next, as a result of investigating the relationship between salary and programming languages frequently used by professional programmers, it was found that programmers who use Perl, Scala, and Go worldwide tend to have the highest income. The average annual salary of Perl users, who was highly hated by programmers and lower in the ranking of the most used programming languages, was $76,000. This shows the possibility that high salaries and lack of programmers may be related.
In addition, in the US, where the number of respondents in this survey was the highest, the salary for Scala employers was the highest. Related information can be found here .
