Gloves with built-in sensor for tactile substitutes developed by MIT

In addition to computer vision and image-based data sets, robots use tactile sensing systems to process objects. Sensors and gloves, which have been used as tactile sensing systems so far, cost thousands of dollars for just 50 sensors. However, the extended tactile glove STAG (scalable tactile glove) developed by the MIT research team is said to be able to expect high resolution by installing 550 sensors while suppressing this with about 10,000 won of a material available on the market.

At first glance, STAG seems to be a simple knitted glove. However, the conductive polymer was laminated and 550 sensors were embedded in the palm or finger.

It is said that if you hold an object while wearing the STAG, the pressure signal data is interpreted by a neural network to identify the object with 76% accuracy. In addition, if it is an object within 60g, the weight can be predicted.

It is possible to bend up to the second joint of the index finger by the object, but there is a difference, such as that the thumb can hardly move and hold it. This information is said to be important data when the robot handles objects in the future. Related information can be found here .
