Virgin Galactic, a private space company led by Richard Branson, head of the Virgin Group, announced that it has signed a contract with NASA to train astronauts on the International Space Station ISS.
The contract does not use Virgin Galactic’s spaceship SpaceShipTwo to transport personnel to the ISS, but acts as a travel agency to find and introduce passenger candidates for commercial flights to NASA and ISS. For example, in search of companies or organizations interested in sending people to space stations, they allocate transportation such as SpaceX Crewdragon, Boeing CST-100 Starliner, Russian Soyuz, and even intermediary pre-training programs for space travel Prepare the necessary resources both on earth and on earth.
Virgin Galactic is also developing Spaceship2 to provide its own commercial space travel to its customers, and for this purpose, it is developing a customer training program at the SpacePort America facility in New Mexico. Originally, we would like to find customers for space travel that we provide rather than customers for NASA, but Virgin Galactic may have considered expanding its revenues by allocating its experience building services to NASA contracts so far.
NASA said Virgin Galactic will develop an astronaut preparation program to assess the feasibility of its plans to enable civilian astronaut missions to the ISS. This agreement can be said to promote NASA’s policy to open the ISS for more commercial use.
NASA has said that actor Tom Cruise plans to shoot a movie at ISS. SpaceX also announced that it will partner with Axis to launch a space travel service that will take civilians to the ISS and higher altitudes. Virgin Galactic was listed on the New York Stock Exchange last October. Therefore, it can be said that not only space tourism, but also multilateral business profit structure is being built.
