Firefox stops supporting Fire TV and Eco Show browsers

Mozilla announced the end of Firefox browser support on April 30 on Amazon’s Fire TV and Echo Show. There is no security update provided after shutdown, and if removed, it cannot be reinstalled. Also, if Firefox is set as the default browser in Echo Show, if you try to start it, it will lead to the Amazon Silk browser.

In 2017, Google terminated its YouTube service at the Amazon Echo Show and released the official YouTube app from FireTV. This was seen as retaliation for Amazon’s refusal to sell Google’s Chromecast and Nesthub products that conflict with FireTV and Echo Show.

However, Amazon provided Mozilla Firefox to give you access to YouTube from a web browser as a way to play YouTube on FireTV. In 2018, Firefox also appeared on the Eco Show.

However, at the same time as Firefox, Amazon has also started offering its own chromium-based silk browser, so the need for Firefox as a YouTube playback app will be greatly reduced. In addition, Google will resume providing YouTube apps to FireTV in 2019. The YouTube app is not yet available for Echo Show, so both browsers have provided a way to view YouTube on the Amazon Smart Display.

Mozilla may not feel the need to continue supporting Fire TV and Eco Show anymore. If you don’t have Firefox, and want users to watch YouTube on a Pi TV device, you can choose the default browser, Silk. Related information can be found here.
