Mobian is a project that aims to integrate Debian, a Linux distribution, and Phone Shell, a project to develop a graphic shell for smartphones, and to create a Debian package that runs on smartphones such as Pinephone. all.
Phone shell is being adopted in Librem 5 of Purism, which is a major development of PureOS-based smartphones from graphic shells for touch-based mobile terminals such as smartphones. Mobian is based on the phoneshell to make Debian distributions run on smartphones. Mobian’s strength is that it is a platform that protects privacy without being tracked by software and without ads, emphasizing that it is a truly open mobile operating system.
Mobian was first unveiled at the PINE64 community forum, a 64-bit single-board computer in May 2020. In order to achieve the goal of running genuine Debian on a smartphone, we started development to run Debian in a phoneshell. After exchanging opinions with various developers, the direction of the Mobian project was determined and the Mobian repository was released to GitLab in February 2020.
In January 2021, Pine Phone Mobian Community Edition, which installed Mobian on Pine Phone, a Pine 64 Linux smartphone, was released. The Fine Phone is $149 for a model with 2GB of RAM and 16GB of storage, and $199 for a model with 3GB of RAM and 32GB of storage. Related information can be found here.
