On August 29 (local time), Microsoft Suphx, an AI developed by Microsoft, announced that it has reached the highest level in the online mahjong game Emperor (天凰), 10 dan. AI has participated in mahjong games in the past, but this is the first time it has reached the top.
Microsoft Supix is a Mahjong AI developed by Microsoft Research Asia, a research and development organization affiliated with Microsoft. This AI, which participated in the Emperor in March, has experienced more than 5,000 matches so far, has averaged more than the best player in Chun-Hwan, and has been promoted to 10th, the highest in June. There were 130 players who reached 10th. Until now, only 12 users have been maintained at 10 levels.
Unlike open table games, Mahjong is complicated by incomplete information and factors such as luck. Therefore, it has been considered difficult to create an AI that responds to Mahjong. Microsoft Supix continues to improve its algorithms to cope with the complex game characteristics of Mahjong, and improves coaching skills and appropriate decision-making skills, finally gaining skills comparable to the best players.
Of course, there are still tasks left, but the birth of an AI that responds to a game with incomplete information is expected to have a great impact on AI development in the future. Microsoft said that it could be used in smart driving or financial investment, for example, and that AI will increase its value if it can respond to emergency situations that occur in our bodies as many unpredictable accidents occur in our daily life.
