Brazilian authorities fined Apple without power adapter

A consumer protection regulator (PROCON.SP) headquartered in Sao Paulo, Brazil, has fined Apple 105 million reals for not including a power adapter in the iPhone 12 series launched in 2020.

In October 2020, the agency began investigating that Apple did not include a power adapter in the iPhone 12. Apple explained that the reason why the iPhone 12 did not provide a power adapter is to reduce the environmental load. However, the agency said in November 2020 that it proved that it could benefit from the same environmental benefits by not providing an Apple power adapter. In addition, questions such as whether the iPhone 12 sales price fell due to not providing a power adapter to Apple, how much will the iPhone sales price be different if the power adapter is included or not, and whether the number of power adapter production decreased due to not including the power adapter? However, it is said that there was no response from Apple.

Apart from the problem that the iPhone 12 does not include a power adapter, the agency is pointing out that Apple has problems such as misleading advertisements, iOS update issues, and unfair conditions. Specifically, the flooded iPhone could not be repaired or the iPhone failed to support problems that occurred after an update, and the agency warned that Apple should respect Brazilian laws and institutions.

If Apple disagrees with a fine imposed, it can appeal to the court. Related information can be found here.
