Alienware unveiled the new m15 R4 and m17 R4 models with Cherry switches. It was the result of announcing the partnership with Cherry three years ago.
Unlike the previous notebook switch, the MX Low Profile, Cherry’s new MX Ultra Low Profile switch is thinning to 3.5mm in height. As a result, Alienware maintains the chicle-style keytop currently used, while realizing a sufficient click feel like a mechanical switch.
The new Cherry Switch is one-third thicker than the MX Low Profile Switch 11.9mm. By widening the switch width to create a new two-piece keycap structure, and using stainless steel parts, Cherry developed a more stable and durable switch than before. Each switch can withstand 15 million strokes. It also has a relatively long keystroke of 1.8mm, but the Cherry Switch is thin, so it can be added with the m15 R4 and m17 R4 options without changing the size of the Alien notebook.
Like a gaming laptop keyboard, it also has AlienFX RGB lighting, anti-ghost technology, and n-key rollover to check if keystrokes are properly registered.
The biggest downside to the Cherry MX Ultra Low Profile switch is that it costs a $150 upgrade from the standard key. Related information can be found here.
