U.S. NASA to test 3D printer for lunar base at International Space Station

NASA’s latest International Space Station mission is equipped with a 3D printer demonstrator for building on-site using soil from the moon. The project, called RRP (Redwire Regolith Print), is linked with existing printing equipment to conduct a 3D printer demonstration test using a material similar to the soil on the moon to check whether the output shows the expected strength on Earth and in other environments. .

To keep astronauts on the moon, we need to build a facility, but it is not realistic to take all the materials from Earth. Therefore, researchers have been researching the construction of residential facilities using locally procured lunar soil for several years and coming up with various ideas. NASA has also solicited innovative ideas in the form of public offerings.

This experiment is to check whether soil 3D printing will work well under low gravity, which is seriously aimed at realization. Although there are still many challenges, it is expected that the experiment will serve as a stepping stone for this realization. In addition, it could be helpful not only to the moon, but also to the future Mars. Related information can be found here.
