“Even now, over 30 million people every month… ”MS Solitaire celebrates its 30th anniversary

Solitaire, which was installed in the Windows series from Windows 3.0, released in 1990, became a famous game worldwide with the explosive success of Windows 95. This solitaire celebrated its 30th anniversary in 2020.

Solitaire has been loved by many for many years and still has 35 million people playing the game every month, with 100 million plays per day. Originally developed as part of Windows 3.0, this game is also helpful in teaching Windows users the basic task of dragging and dropping, as it requires dragging and dropping cards on the screen.

The game was initially called Windows Solitaire, shipped with all versions of Windows for 20 years from 1990, and was not preinstalled since Windows 8, released in 2012. However, it was available for free downloads on Windows 8 and Windows Store, and many still enjoyed the game.

Then, in Windows 10, which was released in 2015, the theme effect was changed, and friends could compete with each other through ranking, and then pre-installed and provided again. The number of PCs provided with Solitaire pre-installed exceeded 1 billion, and the number of unique visitors exceeded 100 million in 2016.

In fact, it was Wes Cherry, who worked at Microsoft as an intern in the summer of 1988, not a full-time Microsoft employee who made Windows Solitaire. According to what I said on an online bulletin board in 2016, Solitaire was developed for Windows 2.1 in my spare time. However, there were rewards in other games, but nothing seems to have been paid for solitaire.

He also tried to add a feature called Boskey at the beginning of development. While playing solitaire while working, if a boss or co-worker seems to be caught, pressing a specific key will display a fake spreadsheet and pretend to be working just before. However, it is said that this solution was rejected by Microsoft before the release of Windows 3.0.

He says he could have saved the man who had been fired by former New York mayor Michael Bloomberg if Boskey had remained. This is the story of a man who was fired for playing a card game while working in 2006.

Microsoft has translated Solitaire into 65 languages and is now officially released not only for Windows, but also for iOS and Android. The game was also named in the World Video Game Hall of Fame by the Dustlong Museum, the National Toy Museum in the United States in 2019. Related information can be found here .

Through the monthly AHC PC and HowPC magazine era, he has watched 'technology age' in online IT media such as ZDNet, electronic newspaper Internet manager, editor of Consumer Journal Ivers, TechHolic publisher, and editor of Venture Square. I am curious about this market that is still full of vitality.
