Qualcomm’s 5G-enabled robot development kit

RB5 is a robot development kit that supports 5G communication, announced by Qualcomm. It is a model following the RB3 announced in 2019.

RB5 supports 5G communication and AI for the first time among autonomous robot development support platforms. The key is a new processor for robots, the QRB5165. This SoC is equipped with a Kryo 585 CPU and Adreno 650 GPU, and supports 15 teraflops of AI processing. It adds 5G connection speed and supports millimeter wave bands. The previous generation RB3 adopted the Snapdragon 845, which was also used in smartphones as an SoC, but this time, a robot-only processor was prepared.

The camera is equipped with a 12-megapixel main, tracking, depth sensor, and ToF sensor, and supports up to 7 cameras, 8K, 4K HDR video, and 200 million pixel shooting processing. In addition, various sensors such as magnetic force, barometric pressure, temperature, and ultrasonic waves are also installed.

RB5 can handle neural processing, machine vision, localization, and obstacle detection. Applications from home robots to drones can be expected. Nowadays, systems capable of autonomous operation from household cleaning robots to facility security robots and drones are required in various industries. RB5 is expected to exert its power in the development of these products. Related information can be found here .
