Facebook has announced that it will end the sale of the Oculus Go, an entry model for virtual reality headsets. It also announced in early 2021 that it will provide a new way for developers to distribute Oculus Quest applications.
According to this decision, the Oculus Store will end the registration and update of the Oculus employment app by December 4th, and after December 18th, the new release will disappear from the store. Of course, the end of the sale of Oculus Go does not mean that it will be unavailable, and system software bug fixes and security patches will continue to be available until 2022.
Facebook explained that the current virtual reality headset is equipped with 6DoF, which adds location tracking to the head movement, to give a sense of the future of virtual reality. In the case of Oculus Go, a 3DoF product, sales are ending this year to focus on improving Quest and Rift products. Explained.
Oculus Go is designed as an inexpensive product mainly for non-game apps, such as virtual reality video services. In 2018, Wal-Mart introduced thousands of sets of Oculus Go to train employees for virtual reality video. It is also used to broadcast virtual reality videos such as sports and concerts.
However, virtual reality videos are not generally considered to have settled, and games are the most successful content in recent virtual reality. Facebook emphasizes that it is difficult with Oculus Go’s 3DoF and 6DoF support is required to fully enjoy popular virtual reality games.
It can be said that Oculus intends to supply virtual reality headsets to users through more than Quest products with higher degrees of freedom. Providing a new way for developers to distribute Quest applications next year can also be seen as sticking to attractive apps and promoting the quest transition from Go.
