British electric scooter rental business legalized

The electric scooter rental business became legal in the UK on July 4th. The background is to secure new means of transportation for citizens while the use of public transportation is restricted due to Corona 19.

British Deputy Secretary of State Rachel Maclean announced on June 30 that a new system to recognize electric scooter pilots will take effect on July 4. Accordingly, local governments in the UK and equivalent agencies can permit the business of rental electric scooters that have been applied in the region. The trial runs for 12 months, during which the electric scooter safety and effectiveness will be evaluated.

You must be 16 years of age or older to use an electric scooter and get a driver’s license. The speed limit is 25km/h. Initially, the British government has carried out an improvement of laws related to electric scooters with the aim of 2021. However, as the demand for transportation means to replace public transportation has increased due to Corona 19, rapid institutionalization was carried out.

In this announcement, the British government said in this announcement that the escape from self-isolation and containment is a golden opportunity to rebuild traffic in a more eco-friendly, sustainable and healthier way. It is expected to contribute to reducing and securing social distance.

However, only rental electric scooters are legalized this time. Not admitting privately owned electric scooters to run on the road. Others point out that electric scooters are convenient because they can run on sidewalks and motorways more smoothly than bicycles, but are dangerous to pedestrians and drivers. Of course, some point out that it has already been legalized, and the US, Europe, and Asia are now barely catching up with the areas where electric scooters have been developed for several years.
