The DNC of the Democratic National Committee, which leads Democratic organizations across the United States, and the RNC, the Republican National Committee, which leads the Republican organization, have warned the relevant organizations of concerns about privacy concerns about the video-sharing app TikTok. It is pointed out that TikTok is operated by Chinese company ByteDance, and whether user data is in the hands of the Chinese Communist Party.
TikTok has been concerned about sending data to China. In 2019, an American university student sued for sending personal information to a server in China. In addition, in June 2020, TikTok’s reading of the clipboard contents was visualized in the iOS14 developer preview version, causing a topic.
TikTok, which has been criticized all over the world, has changed the specification of copying the contents of the clipboard, but is still drawing strict attention to TikTok. On July 6 (local time), U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said that the U.S. government is considering a ban on the use of TikTok, and on the 7th, President Donald Trump also acknowledged that the government is conducting a review of the ban on TikTok.
In the meantime, national organizations in the United States, DNC and RNC, also warned of the dangers of TikTok to election campaigns and affiliated organizations. In an email from DNC sent to officials on July 10, the security team advised employees not to use TikTok on personal devices, and said that if TikTok is used in a campaign, it is recommended to share an account with the device.
This is not the first time DNC warns about foreign apps and products. In 2018, it was notified that Chinese company ZTE and Huawei devices should not be used, and in 2019, they warned not to use Russian apps (FaceApp).
In addition, on July 11, RNC also warned officials. In response, RNC said it advised employees and stakeholders not to download TikTok to personal devices in security issues.
TikTok said that the company is committed to protecting user privacy and security, and insisted that it is working with Walt Disney executive CEO Kevin Meyer to develop a top-notch security infrastructure and to consolidate the platform.
DNC and RNC aren’t the only ones warning employees or officials about TikTok. On July 10, there was a report that Amazon asked employees to delete the TikTok app from their smartphones. Amazon sent an email to remove TikTok from devices accessing its internal contact email application from a security risk, but the email was immediately withdrawn. Amazon claims it was sending emails to employees incorrectly.
In addition, California-based financial institution Wells Fargo has also indicated privacy concerns to employees who installed TikTok on their devices and instructed them to uninstall the application. Wells Fargo said it has ordered its employees to delete the app in line with concerns about TikTok’s privacy and security, and the practice of requiring only company-owned devices to be used for company work.
