KFC has formed a partnership with 3D Bioprinting Solutions, located in Moscow, Russia, with the aim of developing a 3D bioprinting mass using materials composed of chicken tissue and plant ingredients. KFC has revealed that it aims to realize the characteristic KFC taste and reproduce the texture as it is the nuggets sold by KFC.
KFC is focusing on product development using vegetable ingredients, and in 2019, products made with vegetable ingredients made by Beyond Meat were tested and sold in some stores in 5 hours. KFC explains that the technology that generates meat from nugget chicken cells can reduce farmland required for poultry by one-hundredth and reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 25 times.
3D Bioprinting Solutions said that 3D bioprinting technology, which was a technology used in the medical field, is now attracting attention in the food production field. He said he expects to accelerate.

Care should be taken whether this 3D bioprinting nugget contains chicken ingredients. Also, KFC does not stop selling Beyond Meat artificial meat chicken. It recently launched trial sales in 50 California stores, and will decide whether to expand the country based on the results. Maybe in a few years, KFC will sell 3D printed nuggets containing 100% chicken ingredients and 100% synthetic meat species in addition to chicken.
For reference, in the medical field, UC Berkeley is working on the development of technology for 3D bioprinting and manufacturing human organs. Normal 3D bioprinting technology tends to degrade cells before printing is finished, but UC Berkeley is developing a technology that freezes and prints the printed tissue as a solution.
In this announcement, the 3D printing solution technology was not explained in detail, but as it is a product to be put in the mouth, sufficient attention and consideration may be required for safety. 3D bioprinted meat will begin testing this fall, and it is not yet known when it will be available for general use.
