After Boston Dynamics sold the robotic dog Spot in June, it will launch next spring with an optional robotic arm.
Spot is available for $75,000, and the optional items currently on sale include a charging kit that costs around $1,650, and a rider and camera kit that costs $34,570. Among the spot videos released during the development process, the robot arm that resembles the head of a prominent pterodactyl is a necessary option for opening a handle or grabbing something, and moving from room to room within a building. It means that this option will be available for purchase from next year.
In June, founder Marc Raibert said that a robot arm prototype already exists, but it is still incomplete. Now, if Spot is equipped with a 6DoF robot arm, the field of use is expected to increase dramatically.
CEO Labert predicted that in the future, robots such as Spot will spread to general households, collect laundry or something scattered on the floor, and evolve to the level of caring for the disabled and the elderly. We are looking forward to participating.
Rob Plater, CEO of Boston Dynamics, said that the robotic arm provides not only the arm itself, but also a UI for users to set usage. In this case, remote control as well as autonomous operation is possible with the naked eye through a remote control tablet. However, as expected, it is clear that significant cost savings are needed to spread the spot to general households. It will still take several years or more for this to happen.
