According to the latest report released by market research firm Canalys, India had a record high in smartphone shipments for the quarter by the end of September 2020. In the third quarter, 50 million smartphones were released in India, setting a new record for quarterly shipments. Shipments in the second quarter were 17.3 million units, and 33.5 million units in the first quarter.
Xiaomi has occupied the first place in the Indian market by smartphone shipments since the second half of 2018. This quarter’s share was 26.1%. This was followed by 20.4% of Samsung Electronics, 17.6% of Vivo, and 17.4% of Realme. However, it seems that there is also a change in the market as the corona 19 is engulfed in confusion. Another market research firm, Counterpoint, has revealed that in the third week of October, Samsung Electronics will regain its No. 1 position in India in the third quarter. It is said that Samsung Electronics is actively targeting the Indian market, online sales have been strong, and anti-Chinese sentiment in India has been heightened.
Due to the geopolitical tensions between India and China, many Indian consumers choose US or Korean brands. In addition, in this market where Chinese conglomerates dominated more than 80%, local smartphone makers are also seeking to revive. Micromax, an Indian brand that once dominated the market, is pushing for a new smartphone brand called In in October. The company is said to be investing $67.9 million in the brand.
The Indian government recently approved applications for 16 smartphone and electronics manufacturers through a $6.65 billion incentive program to increase smartphone production in India over the next five years. It is expected to provide incentives to Foxconn and two Apple subcontractors, Samsung Electronics and Micromax, and Indian brand Lava. Of course, Chinese companies such as Oppo, Vivo, One Plus, and Real Me are not on the list. Related information can be found here .
