Samsung Electronics’ first 5nm processor released

Samsung Electronics announced the Exynos 1080, a mid-range SoC that supports 5G in Shanghai, China on November 12 (local time). This product is also a processor using its first 5nm manufacturing process.

In terms of specifications, it is composed of octa-cores such as one Cortex-A78 2.8GHz, three Cortex-A78 2.6GHz, and four Cortex-A55 2GHz, and the GPU is equipped with Mali-G78 MP10. The display supports 90Hz for WQHD and 144Hz for full HD standards. The camera supports two 200 million pixels in a single and 32 million pixels in a dual, and the maximum number of cameras is six.

Compared to the previous generation, the single-core performance is 1.5 times, multi-core is double, and the GPU performance is 2.3 times. The power efficiency was also improved by 10%. In addition to the downlink 5.1Gbps Sub-6, 5G communication also supports 3.67Gbps millimeter wave, and supports 5.2 for Bluetooth and IEEE802.11ax for Wi-Fi.

Samsung Electronics is also working closely with Vivo in China in the development process, and Vivo is expected to launch a smartphone equipped with Exynos 1080 in early 2021.

In addition to the Apple A14 Bionic, the 5nm manufacturing process has already been adopted by Huawei in the Kirin 9000. These semiconductors were manufactured by TSMC in Taiwan, but as Samsung Electronics started producing chips in the 5nm manufacturing process in earnest, the mobile electronics field is expected to shift to the 5nm manufacturing process. There is also a report that the next Snapdragon 875 using 5nm manufacturing process will be announced in December. Related information can be found here .
