Google plans to build optical fiber network through Israel-Saudi?

It is reported that Google is planning a project to lay international fiber optic cables through Saudi Arabia and Israel. The background of the project’s progress can be seen as the improvement of bilateral relations shaken by the Middle East peace issue.

According to Dubai-based telecommunications company Salience Consulting, Google is planning a submarine cable project called the Blue Raman route. This route is intended to connect India and Africa to a fiber optic network, and when realized, India-Europe connectivity will improve, allowing Google to distribute data centers around the world and increase the competitiveness of Microsoft and Amazon over the market share of cloud computing services. It seems to contribute greatly.

The cable length required for the Blue Raman route is over 8,000 km and costs $400 million. In order for the cable to cross several borders, including Saudi Arabia and Israel, the project needs approval from various regulatory authorities.

Until now, the opening of a network connecting India-Africa has been required, but it has been considered difficult to lay cables due to the Middle East peace issue. However, Saudi Arabia and Israel, which had been in confrontation for several years, did not officially normalize diplomatic relations, but they are showing signs of normalization of diplomatic relations recently. There are reports that the optical fiber network that Google is planning also represents an improvement in bilateral relations.

According to officials from Saudi Arabia and Israel, it is reported that the Israeli Prime Minister visited Saudi Arabia on November 21 in a secret visit to talks with King Muhammad Binsalman and US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.

However, an official from the cable construction project reported that it was premature to declare that the project has progressed as long as Google has not received final approval from the Saudi government, but the route plan must be approved by the authorities.
