2021 Hugo Awards Adds Video Game Category

DisCon III, which hosts the 79th World Science Fiction Convention, announced that the video game division will be added to the Hugo Award for SF fantasy works from 2021.

The Hugo Prize has been awarded to various categories such as novels, mid-length novels, short stories, magazines, and artists through annual votes by members registered at WorldCon, but now video game works are also included. However, as of the time of announcement, the video game category is expected to be awarded a single award in 2021. This is because the committee that hosts the World Cone is based on a system in which the Hugo Prize can be set every year.

Until now, there are awards for magazine writers in the 50s and 60s (Best Feature Writer), awards for book review authors (Best Book Reviewer), and awards for publishers (Best SF Book Publisher). . In the 2000s, he also created the Best Web Site reflecting the Internet era. Discon III added the best video game category to it.

Colette Fozard, co-chair of Discon III, said that the events that took place in 2020 have allowed more people to play video games than ever before. That makes sense and needs the opportunity to celebrate a game of great fun. He also said that the innovative and interactive genre has opened up a new way of telling storytelling and is pleased to honor it.

However, since the Hugo Prize selects the best works from the previous year as winners, the grand prize in the video game category is also a video game released in 2020. Members with voting rights should target games that were first released or significantly changed in 2020 on major gaming platforms with science fiction, fantasy or related themes.

The main platforms will cover virtually all fields as they target PlayStation, Xbox, Switch, personal computing such as Windows, Mac and Linux, and even iOS and Android mobile games.

Of course, the video game division of the Hugo Awards could end as a one-off event in 2021, as mentioned earlier, but the committee is also considering permanent additions to games and interactive experiences. Related information can be found here .

I am curious about this market that is still full of vitality.
