The UK announced on November 30 (local time) that it would ban telecom operators from installing Huawei 5G network equipment after September 2021.
The UK announced in July that it plans to completely exclude Huawei products from 5G networks by 2027 and that it plans to ban purchase from Huawei from 2021. Along with this, the UK government has announced that after September 2021, domestic telecommunications companies have banned the installation of 5G Huawei devices.
The plan to remove Huawei products by 2027 will be officially decided by a new bill. However, prior to this new bill, British Minister of Culture, Oliver Dowden, created a strategy to diversify the 5G supply chain. It is a diversification strategy that prohibits installation of Huawei equipment corresponding to 5G. Among them, Dowden said that it represents a clear path to exclude high-risk companies from their 5G network. This plan identifies and removes the telecommunications operator crisis that threatens the national security, and does not rely on a small number of telecommunications operators for safe and smooth network operation in the future. It is a new strategy that made it clear.
The strategy to diversify 5G networks is to first spend £250 million to create a diverse and competitive telecommunications supply market. British telecom operators like BT Group have strong ties with companies like Nokia and Ericsson, but the exclusion of Huawei could further strengthen their dependency. To break this dependency, the UK government has created an agency (National Telecoms Lab) to increase compatibility among investigators for security, and is expected to start in 2022.
