During the annual investor briefing held on December 10 (local time), Disney announced ABC, FX, and Star, a new streaming brand offering second-century studio content. Star will be released to customers as a new hub for the Disney + app starting February 20, 2021 in select markets including Europe, Canada, Singapore, Australia and New Zealand. It said that it plans to expand to more markets within this year, but did not disclose a specific name of the region.
Of course, the star can put more pressure on the customer. According to Disney, the Disney Plus monthly fee increases from 6.99 euros to 8.99 euros in Europe. Similar hikes will be made in other markets where Disney Plus subscribers can access the star, according to the company.
In Latin America, Star provides a separate streaming service, the Star + brand. The service will start in June 2021, providing entertainment films and TV programs, as well as sports broadcasts such as soccer and tennis.
According to this announcement, Hulu, which has acquired 39 million subscribers with another streaming service owned by Disney, has no intention of deploying global services. Disney also mentioned the possibility of expanding Disney + Hotstar, an on-demand streaming service currently offered in India and Indonesia, to more markets, but did not say which market it will be. This service makes up 30% of Disney Plus subscribers. Roughly speaking, it is 26 million. Disney said that as of the end of September, the number of Disney Plus Hotstar subscribers was 18 million.
Hotstar had millions of subscribers before Disney rebranded its service in India earlier this year. When Disney acquired 21st Century Fox, the parent company of Star India, which operates hot stars, it entered the subsidiary of Disney.
Disney has adopted a strategy to enter the global market through regional characteristics and inter-industry cooperation so far in other markets. The Disney Plus Hotstar fee is $20 per year in India. Disney also announced that it had an average revenue of $2.17 per user in India at the end of September’s quarterly close. On the other hand, the average revenue per Disney Plus subscriber in the United States during the same period was $5.3.
