The CentOS Project, which develops one of the Linux distributions, CentOS, has made clear its policy to focus on CentOS Stream after the end of CentOS 8 in late 2021. In the future, CentOS Stream will serve as a development branch for Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL), and CentOS 8 will end at the end of 2021.
CentOS was born in 2004 as a distribution based on RHEL. CentOS 8 is a version released on September 24, 2019 based on RHEL released on May 7, 2019, and CentOS Stream was released as a developer platform at the same time.
Regarding this policy shift, Red Hat Chris Wright said that CentOS Stream will not replace CentOS Linux, but rather will accelerate enterprise Linux innovation, as an inevitable next step in achieving the project’s goals. The CentOS official blog recommends using CentOS 8 even though the best option for targets after the end of CentOS 8 is CentOS 8 and contacting Red Hat if Cent Stream does not meet the demand.
