Twitter has acquired the podcast app Breaker. Breaker is an iOS and Android app that combines podcast and social media features, and this acquisition suggests that Twitter is paying attention to voice messages.
Breaker CEO Erik Berlin announced on an official blog that the company had been acquired by Twitter. He says he and his co-founders have been using Twitter for a long time, but now they are looking forward to creating new experiences on Twitter.
Breaker has been developing and providing podcast apps for iOS and Android for the past four years. The Breaker Podcast App is an application that combines social features with a podcast app that lets you not only listen to podcasts, but also follow other users, leave comments on podcasts, and rate them. It has the ability to create playlists and share them on social media, as well as a guest mode that can be used without an account.
The Berlin CEO said that when he started Breaker, the podcast app was categorized as a productivity app, such as a feed reader or a to-do list, but that Breaker paid attention to the social community element, adding the ability to display comments on episodes. It is explained that it has evolved into a service that allows users to build communication beyond the scope of existing podcasts.
According to reports, three people including the Berlin CEO, who had worked at Breaker, co-founder Lear Culver, and designer, are expected to work on Twitter through the acquisition. They will be engaged in work to improve the health of conversations on Twitter.
Twitter announced its voice tweet feature in June 2020, and it was revealed in December that it was testing its real-time voice chat room feature (Spaces). Although it is not yet known what field Breaker, who has been developing the podcast app, will be active in the field, reports say that Twitter’s acquisition of Breaker is a message that strengthens the voice message field, even though Twitter has not made any major moves in the podcast world. As Twitter is showing interest in using voice as another medium to push the limits of its recent platform, it is trying to provide users with a way to express themselves other than text.
Breaker’s service will be terminated on January 15 (local time) through the takeover by Twitter. The Berlin CEO suggested that the breaker users will switch to a different podcast app, saying that with the end of the service, the three people who worked at Breaker will be able to quickly get on new jobs. The amount of the breaker acquisition was not disclosed. Related information can be found here .
