Real Sense ID, a facial authentication device from Intel

Although Apple is using facial recognition technology in its device, Intel announced RealSense ID, a device that enables such facial authentication at ATMs and POS on January 6 (local time).

Intel is developing a series of devices equipped with RealSense technology, which is the ability to recognize, understand and learn the surrounding environment. So far, the depth measurement camera LiDAR Camera L515 and the tracking camera T265 (Tracking Camera T265) have appeared.

On January 6th, Intel announced RealSense ID, which combines an active depth sensor with a machine learning model to perform facial authentication. The Real Sense ID is that even if physical characteristics such as the shape of a person’s head and glasses change over time, it is made accordingly. It also explains that it works well under various lighting for people with various heights and skin.

Face recognition technology is a problem that the authentication accuracy of someone is lowered, and it is first used by law enforcement and police, but it is being changed to a direction that prohibits its use such as frequent false authentication or arrest. Amazon, which developed facial recognition technology, also announced in June 2020 that it would cease use of facial recognition technology by police for a year, and IBM also announced withdrawal from the facial recognition market for promoting discrimination and inequality.

In this situation, the financial and medical industries are demanding reliable facial recognition technology. Intel says that RealSense ID has anti-spoofing technology, so the probability of being authenticated with an incorrect input such as a photo, video, or mask is 1 in 1 million.

RealSense ID attaches great importance to the protection of personal information, and all data is encrypted by processing face images in all regions. In addition, it is explained that, as with all Intel technologies, RealSense is working on ethical application and human rights protection, except that authentication is not performed unless the user activates it and can only be used for pre-registered users.

RealSense ID is expected to be used in early stage such as smart lock and access control, POS and ATM kiosks, and ultimately, financial and medical use are also in sight. Intel said it carefully collected data from Asia, Europe, the Middle East, and Africa to cover all races. RealSense ID is expected to be available from $99 in the first quarter of 2021.
