How mobile carriers limit tethered communications

Tethering is a convenient feature that allows you to connect your laptop or tablet to the Internet and use it in places where there is no Internet line or Wi-Fi as long as you have a smartphone. However, tethering may not be used basically because it often provides paid options that are not included in the general contract and must be contracted separately in the case of overseas. Then, how do mobile carriers differentiate between simple communication using a smartphone and communication using tethering?

5G mobile communication is starting today. 5G, which enables the use of 762Mbps, 19ms high-speed lines based on actual measurements, is expected to enable a pleasant Internet environment not only for personal phone communication but also for laptops and tablets through tethering. Unlike Korea, tethering communication is often provided as an option, although it depends on the overseas mobile operator. In many cases, a contract is required for a separate fee. Mobile carriers distinguish and control communication through tethering and simple communication with smartphones.

It is not clear how mobile carriers differentiate communication via tethering from simple smartphone communication. The reason is that it is easy to conceal that users are communicating their searches by tethering, avoiding additional charges.

The easiest way to limit tethering is to ask your network whether tethering is allowed under your current contract and if not, disable the device tethering option entirely. The method of restricting tethering itself through a contract is used when running an operating system defined by a mobile operator.

Also, depending on the operating system of the device, when connecting to Wi-Fi, it is possible to check whether an expected response can be obtained by connecting to a web server on the Internet. If you don’t get the expected response, you’ll have to log in or pay a fee. For example, if you have a Windows PC, make sure you are connected to a Microsoft server. At this time, if the connection information includes the Android SIM card information, it knows that it is tethering.

All transmitted network packets include the transmitting terminal MAC address information. Since the MAC address consists of a communication terminal identifier, etc., it is possible to determine whether the smartphone is accessing the Internet or whether the laptop can be accessed using tethering communication by checking the MAC address of the client. In addition, while smartphone traffic uses a normal APN, if the tethering function is used, a different APN is used. Related information can be found here.

I am curious about this market that is still full of vitality.
