Lego devised a way to make blocks from waste bottles and developed a prototype. Lego has been working with more than 150 developers to find solutions for sustainable block production. In order to find a new material that can be used in high-quality products, engineers and scientists used about 250 kinds of polyethylene material for three weeks, and the white block was made as a prototype.

The material used is certified by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and European Food Safety Agency (EFSA). It is said that the block is made by mixing it with a patent-pending manufacturing method and mixing it with reinforcing additives. Because new blocks require durability just like existing products, impact and drop tests were conducted as well as empirical tests. Further testing is still needed before release, but the product is expected to appear in the near future.

For reference, there are research reports that Lego will decay in the sea by 1,300 years, but it is pointed out that if it falls into the sea or wears out, the possibility of mass production of microplastics is pointed out. It’s a good idea to reuse plastic bottles that have become garbage, but there is a possibility that this will also end up floating in the sea. It may be better to consider a way to actively use bioplastics that return to nature as much as possible. Related information can be found here.
