U.S. Congress submits bill to require sideloading of App Stores

It’s been about two months since Congress introduced a bill to ban the iPhone’s standard app deletion restrictions and break the App Store monopoly. But this time, it was reported that lawmakers from both parties had submitted a bill that would make it mandatory for Apple to download and install apps from third-party app stores and sideloads.

The Open App Markets Acts are led by senators who crossed the border between Democrats and Republicans. It mainly targets app stores and corporate in-app payment systems with more than 50 million users in the United States. In addition, it is interesting to note that while allowing third-party app stores, it is also mandatory to enable sideloading of apps.

However, the bill leaves room for platform operators to argue that the in-app payment system needs security. In other words, it shows consideration for users not to confuse users with the fact that adopting the current policy will not become illegal if it is necessary to protect user privacy and security, prevent fraud, or comply with federal or state laws.

Third-party app stores and sideloading are lines that Apple cannot concede. Even in the lawsuit against Epic Games, Apple has repeatedly argued that allowing third-party storage would compromise iOS safety, and that it does not even allow sideloading.

However, there have been several reported instances of the App Store approving fraudulent apps, and others charging unreasonably high fees. It also drew attention when a developer who disguised his Apple Watch app and left it in the App Store pointed out that the App Store review was insufficient.

On this matter, Spotify applauds the courage and determination of lawmakers for their bipartisan leadership and submission of this bill. said there is Therefore, he demanded that Congress pass the bill quickly, and said that if the bill does not pass, Apple and other companies will change the rules in favor of their services and do more damage to consumers, developers, and the digital economy.

Spotify made such a statement that it is natural for Apple to make such a statement as it has even claimed the EU to investigate antitrust violations against Apple’s control of the App Store payment system and fees. Meanwhile, Spotify is also making moves to partner with Windows 11 at the operating system level. Related information can be found here.
