Zoom adds virtual class feature where students only see the teacher’s face

Video conferencing company Zoom has added a new feature for students during virtual classes: Focus Mode.

This focus mode was designed with a digital learning environment in mind, according to Zoom. With this feature, the teacher and instructor in class can see all students, while students only see the teacher and students cannot see each other. This makes it easier for students to focus on the class without being conscious of how they appear to other students.

This allows the host and co-host who is sharing the screen to see or switch between the shared screens, but only allow participants to see their own content. If the host determines that the participant content needs to be shared with others, it can of course be easily shared.

This setting is always available on the teleconference host side. For example, various operations are possible, such as turning on student video by selecting it during class or turning it off when it is time for group discussion and talking while looking at each other.

Focus mode is built into the free Zoom client, so it can be used for other purposes, such as business meetings and family gatherings, as well as classes. It can also be helpful for beginners in videoconferencing who are not used to seeing faces across the internet. This feature is provided by Zoom in preparation for virtual or hybrid learning during the new school year in the US starting in September. In the United States, the completion rate of COVID-19 vaccination is sluggish, and there is concern that the infection will spread if face-to-face classes are conducted because children under the age of 12 are not eligible for vaccination. Zoom may become more established in the future as an essential tool for online classes. Related information can be found here.
