European Criminal Police Agency arrests 12 international hackers

On October 29, 2021, the European Criminal Police Organization (EPO) announced the arrest of 12 hackers who harmed more than 1,800 people in 71 countries. The hackers mainly resided in Switzerland and Ukraine.

All 12 arrested were said to have been carrying out crimes such as brute-force attacks, SQL injections, and demanding ransoms through phishing mail delivery, as they all played different roles in a highly organized criminal organization. It was also revealed that these hackers were developing LockerGoga, a ransomware installed in the world’s largest aluminum producer, and NetWalker, a ransomware that earned 27 billion won in just 5 months. It is said that 1,800 people in 71 countries were affected by hackers.

The EPO formed a joint investigation team by gathering 6 experts, the FBI, and more than 50 investigators from 7 European police stations, and conducted investigations starting in September 2019 and made this arrest. The arrest was made on October 26, 2021, and in addition to securing new ones, five luxury cars, cash over $52,000, and numerous electronic devices were confiscated.

Damage caused by ransomware can be seen all over the world, regardless of gangsters, corporations, and government agencies. It is a problem that causes contradictions in daily life, such as medical care, and is deeply involved in all Internet users.

The EPO says most of the hackers arrested are suspects in multiple cases in multiple jurisdictions, and the arrest is worthwhile. Related information can be found here.
