Microsoft acquires moderation company

On October 29, 2021, Microsoft announced that it had acquired Two Hat, a provider of content moderation. Microsoft is said to help improve services in game businesses such as Xbox and Minecraft that Microsoft provides with its two-hat technology that uses AI to crack down on Internet harassment.

2 Hat is a content moderation company founded by Chris Priebe, who was in charge of security at Disney Interactive, in 2011 after a 15-year-old woman committed suicide due to internet bullying. Its main business is content moderation, which analyzes and detects harmful submissions. Microsoft and Two Hat have had a business relationship before, but this acquisition will further strengthen the partnership. Details such as the acquisition amount are unknown.

Dave McCarthy, corporate vice president of product services at Microsoft, said that Microsoft and TwoHat have been developing aggressive mediation technologies over the past few years to detect and remove harmful content before it visibly in games; He said that it helped protect the safety of the community, and he expects that the moderation will be accelerated even more and will be used by external partners and existing customers of Two Hat.

Phil Spencer, president of the Xbox division, said on Twitter that community trust and safety are fundamental to the Xbox, and that the company will continue to invest in player safety.

Microsoft introduced the ability to filter text messages in AI in 2019, and is proposing a policy to filter voice conversations in real time in the future. In 2021, Manic Gufta, who has been in charge of product management at Google and Uber, will be appointed as the corporate vice president in charge of Microsoft Teams. Two Hat said it expects to further enhance the digital well-being of its customers and communities as a member of Microsoft. Related information can be found here.
